Olive-picking season in Jordan
My time in Jordan is soon ending. I have learnt a lot of Arabic in this short time.
Living in the Middle East is definitely the best way to learn the language.
This blog will be about the olive-picking season. I will speak about the importance of olives in Jordanian culture. I will also speak about my experience picking olives with my classmates at the Sijal Institute (where I study Arabic).
Olives are a big part of Jordanian culture. They are a big part of the economy, Jordan exports olives to other countries. They have historical value, some of the oldest olive trees in the world can be found in this region. The olive tree is important in the culture, they can live for hundreds of years and are seen as a symbol of peace and hope. Olive oil is an important ingredient in many Jordanian dishes. There is an old story of a king who saw an old man planting an olive tree. The king said ‘You are old and about to die. Why are you planting an olive tree? You will not eat from it.’ The old man said ‘They planted and we ate, and now we plant so they will eat.’
Last week, there was an activity at my institute. The teachers organised an olive-picking activity. We arrived at the Sijal garden after class and gathered around the big olive tree. There was traditional music and we picked the olives from the tree. We climbed around to try to gather all of the olives. When we gathered a bag full of olives, We picked some lemons and a few other ingredients. We used these ingredients to pickle the olives. Then we went to
the kitchen and our teacher showed us how to pickle the olives with the ingredients. We followed the steps and closed the jar of olives. Next month we can enjoy the fruits of our labour.

هذا التقرير سيكون عن موسم قطف الزيتون. أولا سأتكلم عن أهمية الزيتون في الثقافة الأردنية. و أيضا انا سأتكلم عن تجربتي بقطف الزيتون مع زملائي في معهد سجال (حيث ادرس اللغة العربية)
الزيتون هو جزء كبير من ثقافة المجتمع الأردني. هو جزء كبير من الاقتصاد. الأردن يصدر الزيتون الى دول أخرى و يجلب مال للأردنيين. لهم قيمة تاريخية أيضا, بعض أشجار الزيتون الاقدم في العالم موجودة في هذه المنطقة. أشجار الزيتون مهمة بالثقافة. هي تستطيع ان تعيش لمئات السنين و هي رمز للأمل و السلام. زيت الزيتون عنصر(مكوّن) مهم للكثير من الأطباق الأردنية. هناك قصة قديمة عن الزيتون. كان هناك ملك رأى رجل كبير في العمر الذى كان يزرع شجرة زيتون. الملك قال: “انت رجل كبير في العمر و قريب من الموت. لماذا انت تزرع شجرة الزيتون؟ انت لن تأكل منها” . و قال الرجل : “هم زرعوا و أكلنا و الآن نحن نزرع وهم سيأكلون”
الأسبوع الماضي كان هناك نشاط في معهدي. الأستاذات نظموا نشاط قطف الزيتون. نحن وصلنا الى حديقة سجال بعد الصف و اجتمعنا حول أشجار الزيتون الكبيرة. كان هناك موسيقى تقليدية و قطفنا الزيتون من الشجرة. تسلقنا حول الشجرة لكي نحاول ان نجمع كل الزيتون. عندما جمعنا كمية كافية من الزيتون قطفنا بعض الليمون وبعض المكونات الأخرى. استخدمنا المكونات لتخليل الزيتون. ذهبنا إلى المطبخ وأظهر لنا استاذاتنا كيفية تخليل الزيتون بالمكونات. اتبعنا خطوات وأغلقنا جرة الزيتون. في الشهر المقبل يمكننا الاستمتاع بثمار عملنا.
