This summer I am doing a 2-month internship as a translation assistant at Paris Modes TV at Relax News, a fashion broadcaster who specialises in covering catwalk shows, new collection launches, trends and exhibitions. My role in the team is to translate journalists’ articles into English, transcribe interviews and do voice over work for the English content videos.
When I heard that the company needed an intern for the summer, I jumped at the chance to move to Paris. It had always been a dream of mine to live and work in Paris since I started learning French at the age of 14. I had an idea of what I imagined living in Paris would be like after watching every film and reading every book that I could about Paris but after my first three weeks living here I have seen a completely different side to the city, I have discovered that it is a much busier and more vibrant city than I had imagined.

My arrival:
It’s true that trying to find somewhere to live in Paris is extremely difficult. Months before I was due to arrive I was already looking for somewhere to live and I was very lucky to find an apartment online that wasn’t a scam!
My first challenge was to find the Airbnb that I had booked for a few days before I could move into my own apartment. Navigating the transport system for the first time and not knowing where to go was nerve-wracking and got me to immediately use my French skills by asking various people which direction I should go in to find the bus stop. I had been given a list of instructions, in French, on how to get to my Airbnb which included getting the keys from a shop and trying to carry two heavy suitcases up five flights of stairs, as the Airbnb had no lift. I felt very accomplished as I put my bags down in my Airbnb, I had successfully got to Paris and was ready to tackle more challenges to come.
Work:
On my first day at work I was both nervous and excited, I hadn’t received a lot of information about my first day but luckily, I knew the intern who was just finishing her placement year there and she showed me the ropes. My first week was spent alternating work with the previous intern then the week after I was on my own. My first week as an intern at Paris modes TV and it was fashion week, the busiest time for the team. I was not prepared for the amount of work and stress there was in this period. As a fashion broadcaster we have to make sure that the shows and interviews are released to the clients on time and so I had to translate fast, something that I am not used to. Although, my first week was on the job stressful I quickly became used to how things worked and what my role was in the team. I feel as though I have already learned so much in the last three weeks, especially French fashion terminology and transcribing French.

Social Events:
My favourite experience so far in Paris was watching France play in the World Cup. I went to watch the semi-final of France vs Belgium with a friend, there were so many people watching the match that everyone was stood in the street. The atmosphere was electric and every time France had the ball everyone chanted and cheered! When they won the match, the whole street roared with excitement, firecrackers were lit off and we processed through the streets chanting “Allez les Bleus”. We decided to go to the Champs-Élysées to march with thousands of other supporters. The entire street was blocked off and the fireworks, chanting and celebrations continued. There are many more exciting events happening in Paris this summer and I’m looking forward to experiencing some more.

Cet été je fais un stage de deux mois à Paris Modes TV à Relax News, c’est une société de diffusion de la mode qui couvre les défilés, les lancements, les nouvelles collections, tendances et expositions. Je suis l’assistante de traduction alors mon rôle est de traduire des articles de journalistes en anglais, transcrire les interviews et faire la voix-off en anglais pour les vidéos.
Quand j’ai entendu que la compagnie avait besoin d’un stagiaire pour l’été, j’ai sauté sur l’occasion de s’installer à Paris. C’était toujours mon rêve de vivre et habiter à Paris depuis j’ai commencé à apprendre le Français à l’âge de 14. J’avais une idée de ce que j’imaginais vivre à Paris après avoir vu chaque film et lu chaque livre au sujet de Paris mais après mes trois premières semaines ici j’ai vu un autre côté de la ville, j’ai découvert que c’est plus animé et plus vivant que j’ai imaginé.
Mon arrivé
C’est vrai que c’est très difficile de trouver un logement à paris. Des mois avant mon arrivée et j’ai déjà commencé la recherche d’un logement. Heureusement j’ai trouvé quelque part en ligne qui n’était pas une escroquerie !
Mon premier défi était de trouver mon appartement Airbnb que j’ai réservé pendant quelques jours avant que je pourrais emménage dans mon propre appartement. Le système de transport était très difficile à traverser la première fois et tout de suite j’avais besoin d’utiliser mes compétences en français pour demander aux gens dans quelle direction se trouvait l’arrêt de bus. On m’a donné des directions en français sur la façon de se rendre à mon appartement Airbnb ce qui inclut l’obtention des clés d’un magasin et le portage de deux lourdes valises en haut de cinq étages car l’appartement n’avait pas un ascenseur ! Mais je me suis sentie très accomplie en posant mes valises dans mon appartement Airbnb, Je suis arrivée avec succès à Paris et j’étais prêt à révéler d’autres défis à venir.
Mon travail
Le premier jour au travail et j’étais à la fois nerveux et enthousiaste, je n’ai pas reçu beaucoup d’informations sur mon premier jour mais heureusement je connaissais le stagiaire qui terminait son année de stage là-bas et elle m’a montré les ficelles du métier. Ma première semaine j’ai alterné du travail avec le stagiaire précédent et puis la semaine suivante j’étais tout seul. La première semaine comme un stagiaire chez Paris Modes TV et c’était la semaine des défilés, la semaine la plus occupée pour l’équipe. Comme une société de diffusion de la mode nous devons nous assurer que les défilés et les interviews sont diffusées aux clients à temps alors je devrais traduire vite, quelque chose à laquelle je ne suis pas habitué. Même si la première semaine était stressante je me suis rapidement habitué à la façon dont les choses fonctionnaient et à mon rôle dans l’équipe. Je me sens comme j’ai déjà beaucoup appris dans ses dernières trois semaines surtout le vocabulaire français de la mode et comment on transcrire le français.
Les évènements sociaux
Jusqu’à présent, mon expérience préférée à Paris a été de voir la France jouer en Coupe du Monde. Je suis allée avec une amie pour voir le match entre la Belgique et la France, il y avait beaucoup des personnes qui se tenaient dans la rue pour voir le match. L’ambiance était électrique et à chaque fois que la France avait le ballon, tout le monde chantait et applaudissait ! Quand les bleus ont gagné le match, toute la rue a rugi d’excitation, les pétards ont été allumés et nous nous sommes promenés dans les rues en chantant “Allez les Bleus”. Nous avons décidé d’aller sur les Champs-Élysées pour marcher avec des milliers d’autres supporters. La rue entière a été bloquée et les feux d’artifice, les chants et les célébrations se sont poursuivis. Il y a beaucoup d’autres événements intéressants qui se déroulent à Paris cet été et j’ai hâte d’en vivre d’autres.
