Ottobre ha portato grandi cambiamenti qui in Italia, principalmente un trasferimento da Firenze a Milano. Dopo aver trascorso nove mesi a completare il mio master in fashion design al Polimoda e ad assicurarmi la mia prossima posizione, ho caricato il mio appartamento nel retro di un’auto per essere portato a Milano. Il trasloco è avvenuto, per caso, nel pieno della settimana della moda. Ciò ha reso l’accoglienza molto rilevante per come trascorrerò il mio tempo qui d’ora in poi.
Mi sono trasferito con un nuovo gruppo di italiani, che lavorano anche nel circuito della moda come sviluppatori di prodotti o nelle comunicazioni di marketing. Io stesso sto iniziando come stagista di fashion design di abbigliamento femminile presso un marchio che ho idolatrato da quando ho iniziato il mio interesse per la moda. Dopo aver sfilato alla sfilata di moda Carpe Noctem di cui puoi leggere in un mio post precedente, sono stato contattato con un’offerta dal marchio per venire a lavorare qui per sei mesi e vedere se potevo mantenere un posto qui nel team per il lungo termine. Mi sto ambientando bene con una nuova folla e sto tenendo i contatti con gli amici fatti a Firenze, alcuni dei quali sono già venuti a trovarmi per un fine settimana.
Durante la settimana lavorativa, giorno dopo giorno, trascorro del tempo come unica stilista di abbigliamento femminile del team, mentre gli altri sono specializzati in abbigliamento maschile, accessori e design di scarpe. Questa è una grande quantità di pressione come unico designer di abbigliamento femminile nell’azienda, ma è anche una posizione estremamente eccitante in cui trovarsi. Il marchio per cui lavoro si chiama Ann Demeulemeester ed è originariamente un marchio di Anversa. Tuttavia, il marchio si è trasferito qui a Milano negli ultimi due anni e si sta ricostruendo sotto una nuova direzione e “nuovi inizi”. Era un mio sogno far parte di questa rivisitazione del marchio che ho seguito da vicino per così tanto tempo; finora non sono deluso.
October brought big changes here in Italy – mostly a move from Florence to Milan. Having spent nine months completing my MA in fashion design at Polimoda and securing my next position, I packed up my flat into the back of a car to be driven up to Milan. The move took place, by chance, in the heat of fashion week. This made the welcome feel very relevant to how I will be spending my time here from now on.
I have moved in with a new set of Italians – all of which also work on the fashion circuit as either product developers or in marketing communications. I myself am starting as a womenswear fashion design intern at a brand which I have idolized since I began my interest in fashion. Having shown at the fashion show, Carpe Noctem which you can read about in a previous post of mine, I was approached with an offer from the brand to come and work here for six months and see if I could hold a place here on the team for the long term. I am settling in nicely with a new crowd and keeping in touch with friends made in Florence, some of which have already come to visit for a weekend.
During the working week, day to day I am spending time as the only womenswear designer on the team – the others specializing in menswear, accessories and shoe design. This is a large amount of pressure as the sole womenswear designer in the company but is also an extremely exciting position to find yourself in. The brand that I work for is called Ann Demeulemeester and is originally a brand from Antwerp. However, the brand has moved here to Milan within the past couple of years and is rebuilding itself under new direction and ‘new beginnings’. It was a dream of mine to be a part of this reimagining of the brand which I have closely followed for so long; so far I am not disappointed.
