Lorenzo Webster: Enjoying Spain before lock down – March 2020

Enjoying Spain before the lock down – My sixth month in Sevilla

Having not seen the sea for a considerable amount of time, I signed up for an ESN (Erasmus Student Network) trip to Malaga at the end of February. The image I had of Malaga from my visit over 3 years ago was one of a vibrant and colourful city and this was not Malaga bahiaabout to change. Indeed, we had arrived on the last day of the weeklong carnival season and the streets were lined with loosely coordinated but joyful groups of dancers dressed in outlandish costumes. Before long we Malaga alcazabasought refuge at the beach which was of course far more tranquil than how I remembered it from my previous visit in June. However, what hadn’t changed was the small seafood restaurant which drew customers in with its freshly grilled fish. I had a portion of calamares fritos and enjoyed the presence of the Mediterranean Sea.

In the afternoon we visited the Alcazaba, one of the most beautiful and historic sites in Andalusia. It is an ancient fortress which dates back to 11th century when the region was under Arab rule. Built for defensive reasons, it continues to offer a beautiful view of the city and the bay. Meanwhile, internally the prominent features are fountains and small streams of water that run alongside the paths. I learnt that this is because the presence of water was one of the principal indicators of wealth in Arabic architecture of that era. Metres away from the Alcazaba you can also find the ruins of a Roman Theatre and the more modern Aduana customs building from the renaissance period. This is a fine demonstration of the rich and diverse cultural history that make Andalucía such an intriguing region of Spain.

AlcazabaHowever, plans to travel more in this fascinating region were put on hold when the Covid 19 virus began to outbreak in Spain in early March. The worst hit regions were the Basque country, Madrid and Barcelona. In Andalusia the number of cases were at about 400 but growing quickly. President Sanchez decided that he could wait no longer if he wanted to avoid an inevitable healthcare crisis and on 14th of March he declared that Spain was in a state of emergency. From the following day onwards, the entire population was obligated to remain in a state of lockdown for 15 days.
