Literature, travels and lots of football! My second month in Sevilla – Lorenzo Webster, November 2019

Literature, travels and lots of football! My second month in Sevilla

In my second month in Sevilla I have been making a big push to get involved in as many activities as possible. Twice a week I play 7 a side football, which is a great way to have fun, socialise and stay fit all at once. I’ve found it interesting to observe just how differently football is played in Spain compared to in England. The football is far more technical, with a greater focus on one touch passing.

At the same time university is becoming more demanding and time consuming. In particular, having to read literature such as The Odyssey by Homer and The Aeneid by Virgil (both in Spanish) is proving to be a challenge!  However, I am finding the lectures interesting and interactive. The fact that they are more loosely structured and even somewhat anarchic, allows for more debate and on a personal level the chance to test my oral Spanish at an academic level.

I have also taken advantage of some of the bank holidays to further explore Andalusia, a region which is far bigger that many would think. Easily the most enjoyable trip I took was to visit my friend from London who is currently doing a work placement in Granada. In comparison to Sevilla, Granada has a far more peaceful atmosphere and the stunning backdrop of the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains gives it a truly unique touch. Just walking through the hillside neighbourhoods, breathing in the clean air and marvelling at the stunning street art made my trip worth wile. But I was also fortunate enough to attend a La Liga match at the Granada CF.

It was a huge match given that Granada, at the time, had somehow climbed to the top of the table. It must be said that Granada is not traditionally a huge footballing city, but there was still a huge amount of excitement in the stadium and a rather nice family atmosphere.

While Granada may not me the most football crazy city in Spain, Sevilla certainly is. The 10th of November marked the first Gran derbi of the season, played in the stadium of Real Betis. As we live in the area of Nervion which traditional Sevillista turf, my friends and I ended up watching the match in a Sevilla bar. The atmosphere was ferocious. I, somewhat provocatively, was wearing a Betis shirt and received lots of abuse throughout the night (most of it friendly I must add). I can certainly confirm what many had told me before; that El Gran Derbi de Sevilla is the biggest game in Spain.
