ENTRATA UNO – DETTAGLI DI FIRENZE
Ciao da Firenze, Italia! Mi sono ambientata molto bene – frequentando il Master in Fashion Collection Design presso l’istutito Polimoda. Negli ultimi due mesi ho lavorato nella culla del rinascimento artistico, imparando per mano di abili artigiani e presentando le mie scoperte a tutti i miei colleghi, insegnanti e esperti del settore.
Il compito che mi è stato assegnato dal mio referente del corso durante il mio primo giorno di università è stato semplicemente quello di passeggiare per Firenze, cercare e assimilare l’ispirazione per il design. Potrebbe essere qualsiasi cosa, dalle porte delle strade dimenticate e nascoste, ai lampioni decorati che costeggiano il fiume che attraversa il cuore della città. Non c’era carenza di ispirazione qui per me e il mio amore per i dettagli storici, l’architettura gotica e l’arte rinascimentale! Anche se non capita spesso, ogni volta che non sono in universita’ trovo che questo sia un compito senza fine. L’album fotografico delle mie memorie fiorentine che ho iniziato la prima settimana sta diventando sostazioso!
Il mercatino del libro vintage che si tiene ogni domenica nella piazza in fondo alla mia strada è un altro modo per esplorare Firenze nel corso dei secoli.Ultimamente ho guardato tutto attraverso gli occhi di Giotto, artista Fiorentino la cui biografia delle opere ha catturato la mia fantasia, da Dante alle riviste d’arte storica,.
Ora ho capito qual e’ la “storia” del mio progetto: un ibrido tra la letteratura classica inglese e quella italiana. Spero che entro la fine della mia permanenza sarò un ibrido tra uno stilista inglese e uno italiano! Vivendo la vita da designer italiano mi sono resa conto di quanto sia forte la mia formazione inglese, ma anche di quanto e’ diversa da quella italiana, alla fine del corso avro una ricca e doppia formazione create dai due forti modi di fare moda, quello inglese e quello italiano.
Ciao from Florence, Italy! I have settled into the swing of things here – attending my Master degree in Fashion Collection Design at Polimoda Fashion school. These past two months I have been working in the birthplace of the artistic renaissance, learning at the hands of skilled craftspeople and presenting my findings to all my peers, tutors and the industry.
The task I was set by my course leader on my first day at university was simply to walk around Florence, look for and record design inspiration. This could be anything from forgotten backstreet doorways to the ornate lamp posts that line the river that cuts through the heart of the city. There was no shortage of inspiration here for me and my love of historical details, gothic architecture and renaissance art! Whenever I am not in university (which I am for six out of seven days a week) I find this is a never-ending task. The photo album of snapshots of Florentine finds that I started on week one is getting sizeable!
The vintage book market that happens every Sunday in the square at the end of my street is another way in which I can explore Florence throughout the ages. From Dante to historical art reviews, lately I have been looking through the eyes of Giotto, a Florentine artist who’s biography of works caught my fancy.
I have now settled on my project’s “story”: a hybrid of British and Italian classical literature. I am hoping that by the end of my time here I will be a hybrid of both a British and Italian fashion designer! Being the only Brit on my course has allowed me to understand what it is that makes my selling point unique whilst living the life of an Italian designer (think harsh critiques, renowned garment quality and lots of espresso).
