¡Buenas tardes!
Otra vez ha sido un mes muy productivo, en el cual mis compañeros de clase y yo hemos tenido la graduación (aunque aún nos queda mucho por hacer, y no terminamos hasta septiembre) pero la graduación es la razón por la que os quiero contar un poco sobre “el Paraninfo”.
Cuando el departamento de traducción e interpretación nos mandó los detalles de la graduación y ponía que tendría lugar en el Paraninfo de la Universidad de Alcalá, algunos de mis compañeros de clase se emocionaron y yo no entendí el por qué.
Entonces me puso a investigar este lugar y encontré algunas cosas muy interesantes, que quería compartir con vosotros. El Paraninfo se construyó en 1516 a la demanda de Cardenal Cisneros (Confesor y consejero de la Reina Isabel la católica) y quien, de hecho, con la ayuda de otros, hizo las yeserías. Desde entonces, los actos más importantes de la Universidad de Alcalá y del mundo de filología y letras se han celebrado allí.
Anualmente se presenta el Premio Cervantes en el Paraninfo. ¿Qué es el Premio Cervantes? El Premio Cervantes es uno de los premios más prestigiosos de literatura en la lengua española. Coge su nombre de Miguel de Cervantes, el escritor de Don Quijote de la Mancha, que por pura casualidad es de Alcalá de Henares y murió el mismo día que Shakespeare.
Entonces, cada año el Rey (o Reina) viene al Paraninfo de la Universidad de Alcalá para presentar este premio. Y es no es muy fácil entrar en este lugar, lo que explica por qué mis compañeros de clase se emocionaron tanto. Unos de los ganadores más famosos de este premio son: Jorge Luis Borges (1979), María Zambrano (1988) y Mario Vargas Llosa (1994) y el ganador de este año era Fernando del Paso. Por lo tanto, si queréis recomendaciones de buenos libros en la lengua española no tenéis que hacer más que buscar el Premio Cervantes y ver los mejores escritores hispanos. (Que no sólo provienen de España).

Dentro del Paraninfo se puede ver los nombres de todos los escritores que han ganado premios, y realmente fue un privilegio poder entrar allí, donde han entrado personas tan excepcionales.
Ahora me toca terminar el trabajo fin de máster y las prácticas obligatorias que voy a realizar en un hospital en Barcelona. La época alcalaína se está cerrando, pero ha sido un placer conocer esta parte de España y la riqueza cultural que tiene que ofrecer.
También me gustaría agradecer todas las personas en John Speak Trust que han hecho esta estancia posible, que, sin vosotros, no podría haber terminado este máster ni aprendido tanto español. ¡Muchísimas Gracias!

Good afternoon!
It’s been a very busy month once again and my classmates and I have “graduated” (although we all still have a lot to do and we do not actually finish until September) but the graduation is the reason why I’d like to tell you all something about the “Paraninfo” at the University of Alcalá.
When the Translation and Interpretation Department sent us all the details about the graduation and we found out that it was going to be in the Paraninfo at the University, some of my classmates and Friends got really excited about it and I wasn’t really sure why.
So I decided to do a bit of research about the place and I found out a few very interesting facts that i’d like to share with you all. The Paraninfo, as asked for by Cardenal Cisneros (confident and adviser to Queen Isabel the Catholic) was built in 1516, and it was him, with the help of some others, who actually did the plastering! Since then, some of the most important ceremonies and classes from both the University of Alcalá and those of the world of philology and literature have taken place there.
Every year the prize, Premio Cervantes is awarded in the Paraninfo. What is the Premio Cervantes? It is one of the most prestigious Spanish language literature prizes in the word. It takes its name from Miguel de Cervantes, the writer of Don Quijote de la Mancha, who happens to be from Alcalá de Henares and who died on the very same day as William Shakespeare.
So every year the King (or Queen) comes to the Paraninfo at the University to award the prize to the most deserving winner. It is not easy at all to gain access to this room, which is why my classmates where so excited. Some of the most famous winners of this prize are: Jorge Luis Borges (1979), María Zambrano (1988) y Mario Vargas Llosa (1994) and this year’s winner was, Fernando del Paso. So if anyone is looking for good Spanish-language book recommendations, you need not go any further than looking for the Premio Cervantes and discover who the best Spanish-language writers are (as they do not only come from Spain.)

Inside the Paraninfo you can see the names of all the writers who have previously won prizes, and it was honestly a real privilege to be able to enter that space, where such exceptional characters have sat before me.
Now it’s time for me to finish my final dissertation and the obligatory internship which I am going to do as a translator/interpreter at a hospital in Barcelona. My time in Alcalá is coming to an end, but it has been an absolute pleasure to get to know this part of Spain and the rich culture that it has to offer.
I would also like to give a huge thank you to all the people at John Speak Trust who have made my stay here possible, because without you, I would not have been able to finish this master’s or learnt so much Spanish. Thank you so much!
