This month I have been settling in to my new placement and getting to know more about the education system and the issues faced by children in the favelas. Many children are forced to repeat grades at school due to the police operations in the favelas causing classes to be cancelled. Their are often bullet holes in the schools and there have been many children that have fallen victim and died due to police operations and drug trafficking after being caught in crossfire during a drug raid. Police brutality and abuse diminishes any trust that the community have with the police because the agents that should be protecting them are killing innocent people and they fear execution for sure ending and therefore will opt to open fire. The favelas have their own laws. crimes such as theft are relatively non-existent due to the severe punishments enforced by the drug traffickers such as the cutting of of a persons hand for stealing. There are a lot of people addicted to drugs however and this can often affect people ability to have safe sex and become a responsible parent. This leaves a lot of children who require extra care and support as they do not receive any support at home.
I’m really excited about my placement for my second semester. I’m working with children aged 12-16 who come from a few of the favelas that are local to my area. I attended a meeting where we discussed my roles and responsibilities and I was eager to have as many as I could manage. Part of my role as the volunteer coordinator I will be running orientation meetings, managing the time slots and classrooms for the private English tuition, and organising requests from prospective volunteers. This will involve me attending their English classes to observe how they run and also to get to know the students. I will be visiting the favelas where they come from so that I can form a solid relationship with the community to be able to help where help is needed. My main responsibilities whilst I’m here are to run classes on friday of which I have full control and I hope to do photography workshops, football and also workshops focusing on values, respect, family planning, leadership, teamwork and human rights. The children don’t have the opportunity to play and act like children as most come from difficult families with bad parenting. I think it’s really important for them to have people outside of their family who they can trust and who care about their education and can inspire them to work hard too. I will also be involved in the planning of their community in action monthly project that focuses on particular needs in the community. This in the past has involved book collections in the favela for a library, painting and decorating of run down buildings and litter collections at the beach. Observing my first English class was something very special and I am feeling very inspired to do as much as I can here. I am now considering a future in teaching and I think teaching a language is a gift that will keep on giving.
Este mês, venho me adaptando à minha nova colocação e conhecendo mais sobre o sistema educacional e os problemas enfrentados pelas crianças nas favelas. Muitas crianças são forçadas a repetir as notas na escola devido às operações policiais nas favelas, causando o cancelamento das aulas. Muitas vezes, eles são buracos de bala nas escolas e muitas crianças foram vítimas e morreram devido a operações policiais e tráfico de drogas, depois de serem pegos em fogo cruzado durante uma operação antidrogas. A brutalidade e o abuso da polícia diminuem qualquer confiança que a comunidade tenha com a polícia, porque os agentes que deveriam protegê-los estão matando pessoas inocentes e temem a execução com certeza e, portanto, optarão por abrir fogo. As favelas têm suas próprias leis. crimes como roubo são relativamente inexistentes devido às severas punições impostas pelos narcotraficantes, como o corte da mão de uma pessoa por roubo. No entanto, existem muitas pessoas viciadas em drogas e isso pode afetar a capacidade das pessoas de fazer sexo seguro e se tornarem pais responsáveis. Isso deixa muitas crianças que precisam de cuidados e apoio extras, pois não recebem apoio em casa.
Estou realmente empolgada com minha colocação no meu segundo semestre. Estou trabalhando com crianças de 12 a 16 anos que vêm de algumas das favelas da minha região. Participei de uma reunião em que discutimos minhas funções e responsabilidades e estava ansioso por ter o maior número possível de pessoas. Como parte do meu papel como coordenador voluntário, organizarei reuniões de orientação, gerenciando os horários e as salas de aula para aulas particulares de inglês e organizando solicitações de possíveis voluntários. Isso vai me envolver nas aulas de inglês para observar como eles correm e também para conhecer os alunos. Visitarei as favelas de onde elas vêm, para que eu possa formar um sólido relacionamento com a comunidade para poder ajudar onde for necessária. Minhas principais responsabilidades, enquanto estou aqui, são ministrar aulas na sexta-feira das quais tenho controle total e espero fazer oficinas de fotografia, futebol e também oficinas de valores, respeito, planejamento familiar, liderança, trabalho em equipe e direitos humanos. As crianças não têm a oportunidade de brincar e agir como crianças, pois a maioria vem de famílias difíceis e com maus pais. Eu acho que é realmente importante que eles tenham pessoas fora da família em quem possam confiar e que se preocupam com a educação e que também possam inspirá-las a trabalhar duro. Também estarei envolvido no planejamento mensal de sua comunidade em ação, com foco em necessidades específicas da comunidade. No passado, isso envolvia coleções de livros na favela para uma biblioteca, pintura e decoração de prédios degradados e coleções de lixo na praia. Observar minha primeira aula de inglês foi algo muito especial e estou me sentindo muito inspirado a fazer o máximo que posso aqui. Agora estou considerando um futuro no ensino e acho que ensinar um idioma é um presente que continuará dando.
