The Environment in Lebanon
The environment and the future of our planet is one of the most important questions
of our generation. There is a crisis under the sea and marine life is at threat. The
world faces many problems such as climate change, global warming and
deforestation. Moreover, the consequences of environment disasters affect
disproportionately the poorest in developing countries. In Lebanon the environmental
situation is quite frightening.
Due to the aftermath of the Lebanese civil war and the current war in Syria Lebanon
has huge financial and political problems. The country is bankrupt. There are no
environmental protection policies in place in Lebanon. There are no laws against
pollution levels and there is no sustainable development framework or corporate
social responsibility. However, I believe one of the worst issues is the lack of
recycling provisions in Lebanese towns and cities. Las year there was a “garbage
crisis” in Beirut and thousands of people protested in the streets.
Because of this crisis there was a need for new NGOs to form as the government
was not tackling environmental issues. One of my friends therefore decided to create
a charity called “Recycle Lebanon”. “Recycle Lebanon” tries to encourage more
people to recycle in Lebanon and to increase awareness about broader
environmental issues.
Every week “Recycle Lebanon” organise “beach clean-ups”. Last month I attended a
beach clean-up in Beirut organised by the charity in partnership with “Green Peace”.
We spent the day picking up litter, plastic, bottles and glass. Most of the people who
attended were young students and the atmosphere was fantastic. Despite the
ongoing challenges, there was a sense of optimism. The photo in this article shows
with me and the founder of “Recycle Lebanon. We called ourselves “eco-warriors”
that day.
In the future, Lebanon needs to invest heavily in renewable energy and creating an
environmental policy. Solar energy, for example, could work very well in this country
if there were to be the necessary finance and support behind it.
