Lorenzo Webster: Christmas churros and new year revision resolutions: Sevilla – January 2020

Christmas lights in Plaza de Cuba

Christmas lights in Plaza de Cuba

As the Christmas celebrations got underway, I was joined in Sevilla by my family who flew down from London. They were immediately taken aback by the astonishingly warm weather. With the bright sun accompanying consistent temperatures of 20 degrees, there was certainly a different feel to the festivities. On Christmas day itself we had lunch at a nice Moroccan restaurant, which was as authentic as you’d expect given the geographical proximity. The beautiful mixture of sweetness and spice perfectly hit the spot. For the rest of the week I assumed the role of tour guide and we took advantage of the nice weather to visit the main monuments in the city. El parque María Luisa and La Plaza España were as stunning as ever.

Locals flooded into the recently built shopping centre to buy presents to give to their loved ones on el dia de los Reyes Magos (6th January). Most attractive to me however was the huge stall dedicated to selling churros. Despite being in Spain for more than three months I had hardly immersed myself in the gastronomical wonder that are churros. Being somewhat out of my depth in the world of churros I ordered three portions, foolishly thinking that this would perfectly serve three people. What I received for my money was enough churros to feed the entire high street! Lesson learnt. This isn’t London.

Once my family had left, it was time to look ahead to the upcoming exam season. 5 exams in a 2-week period meant I needed to start early and make some ground. And so I got to work, interchanging revision with 5 a side football to keep a fresh mind.

Entonces me puse a estudiar.
