Hana Lowry: The arrival of hydrangeas and the summer heat, June 2021

The weather is getting increasingly hotter but we are still not near the temperatures you can reach in humid Japanese summers. Still, these days it is difficult not to want to gravitate towards air-conditioned spaces the moment you step out of the door. It is quite difficult to concentrate otherwise! I have been using the library on campus to conduct my research – and not just for some relief from the glaring sun outside!

hydrangeas the rainy season will start soon

I have had a busy month focusing on a research paper that I am hoping will form a chapter of my master’s thesis. It looks at the representation of mixed-race individuals in post-war Japanese film. I was initially hoping to dip my toes into some digital humanities methodologies, something I have wanted to challenge myself in for a while, but I think that will be a direction I explore when I try to integrate some of the material into my thesis. I am hoping to conduct more interdisciplinary research because of the faculty I am within and the resources at my disposal. I have been attending lectures on the topic of sustainable design and urban environments and as far removed as I thought these topics might be from my interest in film analysis, I found a lot of ideas stimulating and it drove some of my research questions in my paper.

As we enter the summer, I find myself craving cold sōmen noodles and I can’t resist buying watermelon as it greets me, pride of place, in the supermarket’s fruit section. Normally I would associate Japanese summers with matsuri – festivals commonly held within the grounds of local shrines – but since covid, they have inevitably been put on hold. Still, from what I’ve heard colloquially, the question on everybody’s mind is why a ‘matsuri’ on a scale as large as the Olympics is still going forward…
