Charlotte Grundy: Paris – October 2019

A great benefit of doing a year abroad is that you have the opportunity to visit other cities and countries without having to make a lot of effort.   In October, I had the opportunity to do that and I spent the weekend in Lille.  I had never been there before and I was surprised by the beauty of the roads and buildings.  You can see that there is a lot of Flemish influence, especially in the old town which is a very contrasting element to Paris!

Charlotte Nov3Even though I love Paris and I will never tire of the lifestyle and architecture, my trip to Lille felt like a breath of fresh air.  As well as wandering through the streets, I travelled to the outskirts of the city to make the most of the chance to go for a walk in a large park.  In England, I live in the countryside so it was excellent to spend some time in the fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of a capital city.  I have already visited other places in France, such as Bordeaux and Saint-Tropez, but by seeing that there are so many differences between cites that are so close in distance, like the architecture, food and culture; the visit gave me more of a desire to go on more trips.

I also visited Versailles and the palace.  I decided to go there when the summer season had finished in order to try and avoid the great amounts of tourists, but I soon realised that people continue to visit the Palace of Versailles at every time of year, regardless of the worsening weather! However, it was a really good experience and it was interesting to learn a little bit more about French history in a more intense and authentic way.
