This past month in Florence has been the busiest yet. Following my mid-term evaluation at university, I was offered the opportunity to create a collection of work to be showed on the runway of the school’s final graduation show. Me and three of my classmates were then faced with the challenge of creating four outfits in line with our existing body of work within the two weeks leading up to this show. Personally, this consisted of a combination of jackets, coats, knitwear, dresses and skirts within the womenswear field and following my conceptual theme. Following many last minute design changes made by my mentors and quick response decision making alongside my assistant, Giacomo, I finished the work just in time.
It has always been important to me, as the only British designer at my school, to promote local collaborations within my work’s fabrication. The materials that I used included wools developed between myself and fabric mills in the heart of Yorkshire and old and disused linen tablecloths and bed sheets from my family’s attic. With this, my leading tutor wanted to make his contribution of a beautiful linen that had been sitting in his mother’s garage since the second world war. I think that this nicely summarises my collection as a collaboration between my own history and heritage and those of the people supporting me here in Italy.
The show, entitled ´Carpe Noctem´ meaning seize the night was held at Giardino Torrigiani, the largest private garden in Europe, which is in the heart of the city. A circular catwalk was pathed in a circle around the focal point of the garden with the audience, including press, industry and family, sat along the perimeter. Backstage, designers, assistants, dressers, hair and makeup were frantically preparing the models.
Luckily, my nerves meant that I started dressing my models in my work two hours before the show was set to begin – I say luckily as I used every one of these minutes! The day flew by and before I knew it, my models were following me around the runway one last time in a victory lap. Faces that I saw sitting on the front row in between high profile fashion industry names included friends that I knew from my time spent working in Milan, my closest friends from my time here and my mum who had flown over from Sheffield. This was particularly special for me as it was the first show of mine that she was able to attend; I think she chose a good one!
For now, it’s back to work as the show was an added extra to my experience here and my assigned final show isn’t for a few months yet. It was a great privilege and personal achievement to participate in this show alongside the other young designers coming out of the Florence fashion scene. However, my leading tutor was quick to remind me on the day after the show, as we were back in class and at the drawing board, that this is by no means the end of the road for my time here. With many new ideas starting to come back into my head for where to take this work next, I am back into the swing of long, challenging but endlessly enjoyable days working. I look forward to reporting back here a few months down the line with a new vision of my collection!
L’ultimo mese a Firenze è stato il più occupato fino ad ora. Dopo il mio esame di metà corso all’università, mi è stata offerta l’opportunità di realizzare alcuni dei look del mio progetto per poi mostrarli sulla passerella della sfilata di fine anno della scuola. Io e tre dei miei compagni di classe abbiamo quindi dovuto affrontare la sfida di creare quattro abiti, in linea con il nostro stile e progetto esistente, durante le due settimane precedenti alla sfilata. Praticamente, il tutto consisteva in una combinazione di giacche, cappotti, maglieria, abiti e gonne parte del guardaroba femminile, ovviamente ogni cosa è stata realizzata seguendo il mio concetto di stile. Dopo molte modifiche dell’ultimo minuto al design apportate dai miei mentor e soluzioni rapide contro alcuni ostacoli trovate insieme al mio assistente Giacomo, ho terminato il lavoro appena in tempo.
È sempre stato importante per me, in quanto unica designer britannica nel corso, promuovere le collaborazioni con aziende della mia terra all’interno della realizzazione del mio lavoro. I materiali che ho utilizzato includevano lane filate da me e dalle fabbriche di tessuti nel cuore dello Yorkshire, oltre alle lenzuola di lino vecchie e inutilizzate che ho preso dalla soffitta della mia famiglia. Inoltre, il mio tutor principale ha voluto dare il suo contributo con un tessuto rimasto nel garage di sua madre dalla seconda guerra mondiale. Penso che questo riassuma bene la mia collezione come una collaborazione tra la mia storia e il mio patrimonio e quelli delle persone che mi sostengono qui in Italia.
Lo spettacolo, intitolato ´Carpe Noctem´ che significa cogli la notte, si è svolto al Giardino Torrigiani, il più grande giardino privato d’Europa, che si trova nel cuore della città. Una passerella circolare è stata percorsa in cerchio attorno al centro del giardino con il pubblico, inclusi stampa, industria e famiglia, seduto lungo il perimetro. Nel backstage, stilisti, assistenti, vestiaristi, parrucchieri e truccatori preparavano velocemente le modelle.
Fortunatamente, sono riuscita ad iniziare a preparare per bene le mie modelle due ore prima dell’inizio dello spettacolo – dico fortunatamente perché ho usato ogni minuto! Il giorno è volato via e prima che me ne rendessi conto i miei modelli mi stavano seguendo sulla passerella per gli applausi finali. I volti che ho visto seduti in prima fila variavano tra nomi di alto profilo dell’industria della moda, amici che conosco da quando lavoravo a Milano, i miei amici più cari trovati a Firenze e mia madre che è venuta da Sheffield. Questo è stato particolarmente speciale per me in quanto è stata la prima volta in cui lei ha potuto vedere i miei lavori sfilare. Credo, oltretutto che sia stata una delle occasioni migliori per lei a cui assistere!
Ora però, si torna al lavoro, visto che lo show è stato un extra alla mia esperienza qui, infatti il mio esame finale sarà tra qualche mese. È stato un grande privilegio e una conquista personale partecipare a questa sfilata insieme agli altri giovani stilisti che escono dal panorama della moda fiorentina. Tuttavia, il giorno dopo lo spettacolo, mentre eravamo di nuovo in classe e al tavolo da disegno, il mio tutor si è affrettato nel ricordarmi che questa non è affatto la fine del mio percorso qui. Con molte nuove idee che iniziano a tornarmi in testa per decidere dove portare questo lavoro, sono tornata nel vortice di giornate lavorative lunghe, stimolanti e infinitamente piacevoli. Non vedo l’ora di raccontarvi qui come sarà diventata la mia collezione!
